DESCRIERE

The German Shepherd is a noble, highly versatile dog. There are many reasons why the German Shepherd ranks among the top dog breeds, but experts consider the most important attribute of this breed to be its character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn and retain commands for a large number of specialized activities, as well as these dogs' capacity to risk their lives to protect loved ones. With proper training and socialization, German Shepherds make wonderful family pets, as well as tireless guardians of loved ones. All these qualities make the German Shepherd one of the best service dogs: guide dog, rescue dog, police dog, or guard dog.

In any of these roles, the immune system is highly stressed. The German Shepherd belongs to a group of breeds that have a reduced concentration of Immunoglobulin A, which means they have an increased risk of infections. Among blood coagulation-related diseases are von Willebrand's disease, hemophilia A, and the more severe hemophilia B.

German Shepherds are known for their digestive problems, especially chronic diarrhea caused by food intolerances, colitis (inflammatory bowel disease), hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or pancreatic insufficiency. Due to a sensitive digestive tract, the food for these dogs must be rich in easily digestible proteins for high acceptance and optimal digestion.

Regarding bone conditions, it is quite common for German Shepherds to suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia, which can cause them pain as they age and can even lead to arthritis.
