Sphynx Cat: Traits, personality, diet

Origin

To many people's surprise, the Sphynx did not originate in Egypt. The first cat appeared naturally, due to a mutation, in Toronto, Canada. People simply ensured that there would be more specimens, so they bred that cat with another from the Devon Rex breed.

The Sphynx is a cat breed known for its lack of hair/fur. This breed was created in 1960 through selective breeding for people with fur allergies. Although it has no fur, the cat can have different colors on its skin. They have a muscular body, wrinkled skin, large eyes, and whiskers may be present in some cats or absent in others.

Sphynx Cat Personality

Sphynx cats are known for their extroverted behavior. They are playful, intelligent, have a high level of energy, curiosity, and affection for their owners. These cats have a behavior that some compare to that of dogs. Sphynx cats will wait for you at the door when you come home and are friendly with strangers.

Care

Although the lack of fur in this breed eliminates some grooming aspects that would be present in most cats, the Sphynx needs special attention to its skin. It needs to be bathed once or twice a week to remove oils that would normally be absorbed by hair.
Also be careful not to expose them to direct sunlight, because these cats are sensitive due to their lack of hair. A human problem is also found in Sphynx cats: the lighter the skin, the more sensitive it is to sunburn. Thus, these cats can get a tan during the summer. Most cat owners will still say that sunscreen is not needed. If you are unsure whether to use cream or not, ask your veterinarian for advice.
