The Scottish Fold is a rare breed of domestic cat with a genetic mutation that affects its cartilage and gives its ears a folded/bent appearance. This cat is a controversial subject for some people because the mutation that makes it adorable also makes it more susceptible to certain joint diseases. This cat breed is popular not only for its physical traits but also for its loving and gentle character.

Origin

The Scottish Fold first appeared in 1961, in a barn in Perthshire, Scotland. At birth, the cat had bent/folded ears, and after she had kittens, two of them exhibited the same characteristic as their mother. A breeding program began in 1966, resulting in 76 kittens, 42 of which had folded ears, and 34 had straight ears. Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears, and after approximately 21 days, they will fold.

Scottish Fold Personality

Scottish Fold cats, whether they have folded or straight ears, are good-natured, playful, and get along well with people and animals in their environment. They are affectionate cats who bond with their caregivers and become depressed when left alone. This cat breed is intelligent but also stubborn. They prefer to be outdoors.

Coat

The coat of Scottish Fold cats can be long or short and can have almost any color combination (including white). Short-haired cats have a thick, soft coat, while long-haired cats have an extremely dense coat around their ears, tail, breeches, and toes.

Care

During spring and autumn, they shed a lot of hair. It is good to brush them several times a week, and to check their teeth and ears, which can get dirtier than other cats' and lead to infections. It is recommended to be careful with their diet because some can gain weight if they do not have a balanced diet.

Scottish Fold cats should be fed a combination of dry and wet food. A diet with premium or super premium food can have a positive impact on your cat's health and well-being. They should be fed a complete and balanced meal, served on a set schedule to prevent them from gaining weight.
