It can form on medical instruments as well as on animal tissue.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis aspect causes resistance to antibiotic therapy; in fact, bacteria in the biofilm can be 100-1000 times more resistant compared to \"free\" bacteria.\u003cbr\u003e\nThere are bacteria that can produce biofilms, including: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas\u003cbr\u003e\naeruginosa (particularly in cases of otitis in dogs, Figs. 1 and 2), Proteus Mirabilis, Escherichia coli. In the case of yeasts, Malassezia spp. is the one that can produce biofilm, especially in seborrheic dermatitis in dogs.\u003cbr\u003e\nTreatment: topical therapy is the most innovative and involves both the use of effective substances and their combination to achieve a synergistic effect.\u003cbr\u003e\nTris-EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid)\u003cbr\u003e\nBactericidal effect on bacteria that do not grow inside the biofilm (Ciofu et al, 2017); associated with Tromethamine (Tris), it destroys the bacterial cell walls and increases membrane penetration; it is very well tolerated, non-ototoxic and acts synergistically with chlorhexidine (Guardabassi et al, 2010); recently an in-vitro study demonstrated that Tris-EDTA in combination with antibiotics is a very effective support in cases of chronic otitis with Pseudomonas with hypothetical presence of biofilms (Pye et al, 2014).\u003cbr\u003e\nNAC (N-acetylcysteine)\u003cbr\u003e\nN-acetyl is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, has mucolytic action, preventing the production of exopolysaccharides and thus weakening the EPS matrix. It has recently been used in eight clinical studies as supportive treatment to destroy mature biofilm and prevent its formation, proving a safe profile with excellent efficacy.
